Who We Are

ALEx
MCKENZIE
Founder, Lead Researcher
The story of Alex I. McKenzie, MHK, begins in Nassau, The Bahamas. Alex was born and raised in the small island nation until the age of 12, where he then migrated to Canada. His steadfast passion for sport psychology led Alex to completing his BA (Hons) in Psychology from Western University. He continued his studies at the University of Windsor, receiving a Master of Human Kinetics in Applied Human Performance (Sport Psychology). Alex currently conducts and consults on research projects addressing gender and race equity in sport. Some projects include the Black Female Coaches Mentorship Program, securing a Sport Information Resource Centre Grant to conduct mixed-model research on the first of its kind in Canada – a mentorship program for Black women coaches. He was also part of the research team and task force responsible for creating the first anti-racism in sport coaching eModule in Canada.
Sport, community, and mental health are professionally and personally imperative to Alex. He aims to bridge the gaps that exist within the application of mental health and performance in sport. He is completing his Mental Performance Consultant internship with the Canadian Sport Psychology Association, also serving as a member of their Equity, DIversity, and Inclusion committee. As a Bahamian-Canadian, his hope is to de-stigmatize mental health globally by shedding light on the importance of sport psychology programs, particularly interventions that can optimize performance and wellbeing. With unwavering dedication, Alex prides himself on bringing passion and purpose to his pursuit.

Marcus Singleton
Critical Hip-Hop Educator, Afrocentric Advocate
Peace. My name is marcus (iomos marad) singleton. I am an educator, advocate for Black students/ youth, and a critical thinking Hip-Hop artist. I am originally from the South Side of Chicago Englewood community which I think gives me a unique perspective and approach to working with Black students/youth. I am a second-year Ph.D. student at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education of the University of Toronto working on research around Critical Hip-Hop Pedagogy within Black Studies in the Social Justice Department under the supervision of dr. rosalind hampton.
My plan is to work with Black youth in formal and informal settings nationally and transnationally (Chicago, Detroit, Toronto, and Montreal) to build community-based learning practices. The goal is to collaborate with Black students/youth and learn through their interactions with each other as they engage in critical conversations across cities and borders. I would love to create a global classroom to serve as counter space(s) for Black students/ youth to come together to talk about their learning and lived experiences for the possibility of developing new learning practices that are more beneficial for their needs.
